Is Phantom Limb a bio swapper?
Sexuality and Spirituality has a larger role to play when it comes to the case of Neuroscience. Phantom Limb or (ghost sense) pain which is mostly prevalent among the amputees is a condition in which the amputees are likely to develop a pain in their missing organ. It is because that body image that the brain possesses does still possess the organ. It takes a bit time to readjust and adapt with the new morphology. Phantom limb theory has also received great criticisms. I personally observe it as a short term trauma after an amputation. If the case is such then we cannot apply the same for a long term psychological or a mental disposition like that of celibacy. What it provides is an initial head start in the take off stage until the brain accepts the new morphological change.Likewise in the case of religious men and women though has not undergone amputation the genital organs remain inactive. These men and women who abstain themselves from physical intercourse or in any other sexual acts can be very read with those whose organs have undergone an amputation. Though their organs are biologically functions normally, it won’t trigger them an immense pleasure of an intercourse. It is in this backdrop we try to read the importance of spirituality in the celibates.
We can relate the same relation in many incidents, in many of the priest’ marriage cases the girl will be a pious believer, she will most probably from a religious congregation or from the church choir, or even catechists. Seminarians who leave on behalf of relationship issues are more likely to be attracted to girls who are very pious. This happens because of convulsion when the priests, seminarians or any other religious lack a sound sexual and spiritual orientation.
By Phantom Limb theory we read that a simultaneous and parallel orientation can be given to seminarians in order to fortify them in their spiritual and sexual life. I believe this is the major reason why in minor seminary we have hard and fast rules when it comes to the matter of spiritual activities like personal prayer, intimacy with Jesus in the Eucharistic celebration, Nuns sees Jesus as their bride groom who reflects all the beauty on earth and heaven. This spiritual perspective will in fact play a great role in channelization of sexuality and spirituality. Also a notable thing is the devotion to Mother Mary who is the perfect embodiment of motherly affection and care to the seminarians as well as priests whose brains are attuned to a feminine presence. The continued belief that I am a child in the presence of my mother will constantly edify and fortify the sexual and spiritual urges and needs in them. Thus a crucial and mandatory channelization and swapping takes place in between sexuality and spirituality just like the phantom limb swapped the pain received from the cheek to the hand that underwent amputation.
